Canadian Pork Council Chair Rick Bergmann says there were a number of highlights in 2020.

He commented on one of those during a year-end interview.

"After about nine years of pursuing a promotion and research agency, that has been now in effect. What that does is primarily provides promotional and research funds on imported pigs and pork coming into Canada from around the world. That's a good news story for pork producers and again it enhances R&D and promotion of the product that we produce."

Bergmann was glad to see an AgriStability proposal put on the table towards the end of 2020.

"Really happy at this point, the fact that the Federal Ag Minister Bibeau would have proposed a solution for all the provincial ag ministers to consider. We're really hoping that with their FPT discussions...they come to an understanding of how their decisions are going to have a significant influence on farms across the country and that also means the commerce that these farms start in small communities and some large centres as well."
