Feed is one of the highest costs when it comes to cattle production, and as a result, producers are always looking for ways to cut costs and extend their grazing season.

For some producers, grazing corn may be a good option: "If you get the agronomy right and if you get the proper growing conditions, no other crop can touch corn as far as tonnage per acre," said Provincial Forage Specialist Lorne Klein. "The main thing is to meter it out correctly so that you get the cow days per acre that you grow. It's not that corn is an exceptionally better crop as far as the animal is concerned, but for the producer, you can grow this huge tonnage per acre, and in order to take advantage of that, you have to manage it correctly so that the animals are actually eating the crop and not trampling it and wasting it."

Cattlemen interested in learning more about grazing corn should register now for the Corn Agronomy and Grazing Management Video Conference on March 5th, which is a free event hosted by Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture. Producers interested in taking part should pre-register before Thursday March 1st at 5:00pm by calling the Ministry of Agriculture Office in their area.
