The Swift Current Broncos had the luxury in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft of making two first round picks.

That day they nabbed two building blocks for the next generation of their roster with forward Logan Barlage and defenseman Jacson Alexander.

The two made their first steps on the Credit Union iPlex ice this week as a part of the orientation for the entire draft class.

"It's a nice place," Alexander said. "I really liked getting on the ice with the guys, getting to know my way around the town and the rink. It's been a good start."

None of the players drafted this year are eligible for a full-time roster spot until next fall. It's still an opportunity to make an impression and learn the expectations of the Broncos.

"Just develop ourselves," Barlage said. "Show the coaches what we can do, go hard and do our best. I've already made some buddies with these guys."

Even in just a few days together the future of the team is able to build some chemistry.

"First day and we're already getting some new friendships going," Alexander said. "All the guys are really nice so it's been a good start."

Both guys bring different strengths to the Broncos. Barlage is a big pivot who was the top scorer of the Saskatchewan Bantam AA League. Alexander is a puck moving defenceman who played in the CSSHL prep league.

They've both got the attention of new Broncos coach Manny Viveiros.

"Barlage is a bigger boy," Viveiros said. "He moves very well for a big boy and he's got tremendous skill. Alexander is an explosive skater. The game is all about skating these days and both those (players) have those attributes.

Viveiros is hoping the young players can get a sense of what it will take to be a Bronco in the future.

Barlage signed a contract quickly this summer and as such will be eligible to play in exhibition.

"I knew it was just a great organization and I wanted to be here," he noted. "The coaching staff was awesome and the draft picks were awesome as well."

Main camp opens up on Wednesday with fitness testing. Scrimmages start on Thursday.
