Ty Ronning scored at 2:31 of overtime as the Vancouver Giants beat the Swift Current Broncos 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night.

It was Swift Current's third straight loss, but the point for an overtime loss ensured the Broncos would earn five of a possible ten points on their BC Division road swing. It was a much cleaner effort for the Broncos following a 9-2 loss in Victoria.

“I thought we responded well with our effort,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “The highest of highs to start the trip and probably the lowest of lows last night (in Victoria). We were curious to see how we would play. I thought our effort was really good tonight. I thought we had everybody going.”

While the Broncos were still tired after a long trip and four games in five nights, they were able to avoid the kinds of mistakes that plagued them the night before.

“I think we were skating smarter,” Smith said. “We were a little sluggish at times but I thought we were in the right spots and we weren't last night.”

Part of the better result against the Giants was understanding the situation and simplifying their game a little.

“I think you saw us dump and chase a little bit more,” Smith said. “In our own end we battled hard. They were ready to play they had a night off. When you get into these situations you want to make sure you aren't giving them any freebies meaning turnovers, loose pucks... I thought we did a good job of that today.”

Lane Pederson scored the lone Swift Current goal midway through the first period on the power play off a nice pass from Tyler Steenbergen. The Giants responded with a power play goal of their own by Matt Barberis with only three seconds left in the first period.

Both goaltenders played well as Ryan Kubic made 28 saves for Vancouver to earn the win and Taz Burman stopped 35 of 37 Vancouver shots. It was a good response by Burman in his home town after getting pulled the night before.

“He'll be the first to admit he's a veteran guy it wasn't his best game last night either,” Smith said. “He responded really well. In front of your friends and family you want to put your best foot forward and I thought he was really strong tonight. He held us in at times when we were under pressure and made some big saves.”

The BC road swing started very promisingly for Swift Current with wins in Kelowna and Prince George. They lost a close battle in Kamloops on Wednesday before getting blown out Friday in Victoria and getting the single point in a close loss to Vancouver on Saturday. Compared to some previous long trips that resulted in fewer wins and a long list of injuries it would have to be considered a reasonably successful effort.

“We went .500,” Smith said. “That's probably a fair result. Started the trip with the highest of highs and then last night was very disappointing and tonight we sawed it off to get to .500. In the last few years that hasn't happened for this group so it's nice to see and we'll get back home for a few games and hopefully find our home game.”

The Broncos now sit at 8-4-1-1 on the season and have a week off before hosting Seattle and Spokane on October 28th and 29th. They are still ahead of most projections despite the recent losses.

“We're only 14 games into the season so like everybody we're still trying to find our way,” Smith said. “I think we've got off to a really good start. These couple losses hurt you never want to lose, but all in all the stat of the season has been strong. The guys have responded to some of the new stuff we've put in place. The team as a whole is trending in the right way.”

The trip was a large percentage of the team's travel for the season with almost 5000 kilometres and 60 hours on the bus in ten days.

The Broncos play their next four games at the Credit Union iPlex.
