A tough second period proved to be too much to overcome for the Home Hardware Midget 'AAA' Legionnaires in their 2016/2017 season opener.

On the road in Saskatoon, the Legionnaires surrendered five-second period goals, before ultimately falling 6-4 to the Contacts.

The two teams played a scoreless opening frame before Saskatoon broke the game wide open.

Following an early period goal for the Contacts, Shayde Peterson quickly responded for the Legionnaires, however, Saskatoon would take over from there.

The Contacts fired home four unanswered goals before the second period expired, taking a 5-1 lead into the final frame.

After Saskatoon further increased the lead to 6-1, the Legionnaires tried to mount a comeback.

Lucas Ochitwa, Hunter Lamb and Jake Misskey all found the back of the net for Swift Current, trimming the Saskatoon lead to 6-4 with just over two minutes remaining.

That is as close as the Legionnaires would get, though, as they fell to 0-1 to begin the season.

Swift Current will once again try to crack the win column on Wednesday when they host their home opener against the Notre Dame Hounds.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:45pm from the Credit Union iPlex.
