The Swift Current Broncos have cut down their training camp roster leading up to today's annual Blue vs. White game.

Puck drop is 1pm at the Credit Union iPlex.

Getting to the intrasquad game is a sign for prospects they are at least on the team's radar.

One young guy who is trying to make that next step is 16-year-old defenceman Ethan Martini.

"I need to play my game," Martini said. "I need to stay simple and not try and go out of my way because that's when I'll put myself in vulnerable positions. If I play simple, make that first pass every time and play physical I hope they like what they see and I can play as a 16-year-old in the WHL."

The Broncos picked Martini in the third round of the 2015 bantam draft.

At 6'4 the son of former NHLer Darcy Martini certainly has a size advantage that his dad has taught him to use to his advantage.

"He's got really good pointers," Martini said. "Just stresesed to play simple and put defence first. Make that first pass always, play physical and use my size. He's always been a huge help."

It's tough for any 16-year-old to push for a WHL roster spot especially on a team with five returning defencemen like this season's Broncos.

He felt like he made good adjustments playing against some bigger and older players for the Edge School last season as a 15-year-old.

"Playing with the older guys made me react to different plays better," Martini said. "It made me adapt to the speed to hopefully get me ready to play in the WHL. It helped me in some positions with bigger guys."

You can check out Martini and the other prospects and returning veterans on the bubble this afternoon at 1pm.

Proceeds from the Blue vs. White game go to the Kinettes for Telemiracle.
