October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign intended to help grow awareness to the disease, by educating the public about early detection while also sharing preventative tips.

One tip to help prevent breast cancer for adult women to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.

Director of Public Affairs at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency Gladys Wasylenchuk enlightens us on the significance of year-round awareness.

"We certainly from the Cancer agencies perspective want to encourage women throughout not only in October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but throughout the year to really pay attention to their health and get screened when it's their time," she said Friday afternoon.

Wasylenchuk also spoke about the affects Cancer can have.

"Certainly Breast Cancer and all cancers affect more than just the patience. They have an impact on community, friends, and family. We want to encourage women once they reach the age of 50, to get screened. It's a peace of mind for them and their families," Wasylenchuk said over the phone.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. Breast Cancer is a group of cancer cells (malignant tumor) that starts in the cells of the breast.
