maple creek fire

Tuesday night's fire north of Maple Creek

CP Rail has reached out to Maple Creek Mayor's after Barry Rudd criticized them for causing the large grass fire outside of town on Tuesday night.

They're talking to the Mayor, but CP Spokesman Kevin Hrysak said they are still waiting for more information.

“There has been no cause to this incident and it's under investigation as the present moment," Hrysak said. "We will cooperate with any of the agencies involved in a follow investigation into what did cause this incident”

He notes they do take action to prevent train caused fires.

“I don't think that it is a common issue but we have taken steps with locomotives maintenance inspections along with spark arresters, exhaust pipes, composite brake shoes, that sort of thing limit any type of sparks.., we are also operating a newer fleet than in the past.”

Hrysak said representatives from CP talked to Mayor Rudd to discuss his concerns and see if they can follow up with any measures to deal with them.
