SaskPower is promoting a new program aimed at reducing the amount of electricity used by block heaters.

The Crown Corporation is offering a financial incentive to building owners who install controllers that regulate the amount of electricity delivered to plugs.

Program Leader Barb Gilbey says the devices increase the amount of power as the temperature falls and reduce it as the temperature rises. For example, the plugs will operate at 10% power at -5 degrees, and full power would not be offered until the temperature hits -25 or colder.

Gilbey adds that can save a substantial amount of money.

The units cost about $100 per stall, and those interested can contact their electrician.
