Beginning on August 24th, SGI will be further increasing their security measures for customers.

Today, facial recognition software will be in place when issuing drivers' licences and photo identification cards.

Kelley Brinkworth, Manager of Media Relations with SGI explains the purpose of the new technology.

"The technology is a benefit to customers because it helps protect against identity theft. It also helps prevent fraud.

People that are trying to get multiple licenses or IDs potentially under a different name, will be unable to do so with this new system," she said.

Brinkworth also details how the software works.

"The photo gets enrolled into the system, then the system creates a numerical template of the photo.

Essentially it uses landmarks on the face, then it compares that numerical template of the new photo to any previous photo of that person on file.

It compares the current template to all other photos in the database to make sure it doesn't match with someone else," she said.

There is no added cost to customers for facial recognition, and customers are not required to get a new photo or card until their current one expires.
