The Canadian Cattlemen's Association will have representatives in Geneva this week for WTO hearings regarding the U.S. appeal on Country of Origin Labeling.
The WTO dispute panel last year ruled that cool discriminates against Canadian livestock.
John Masswohl, Director of Government and International Relations with the CCA explains the appeal will be heard Wednesday and Thursday, “And then after that we expect we'll know what the appeal body is ruling will be probably about the end of June. It may be confidential to the Government initially we expect it will all be done by the end of July.”
He said the U.S. appeal seems to simply repeating its argument from the original case, “What the appeal is supposed to be is you're supposed to point out that the panel made an error in their inturpitation of the law or the agreement, but rather just seems the US is making the same arguments over again in saying the panel was wrong they didn't agree with the United States.”
Masswohl says they're confident the Americans will lose the appeal.
