Canada and Japan have agreed to start negotiations toward a new free trade agreement, and the Canadian Cattlemen's Association is welcoming it. CCA Past President Travis Toews joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz on a trade mission to Asia this weekend.

He says an economic partnership with Japan would benefit the Canadian beef industry provided the negotiations address long-outstanding issues and barriers. Toews added full, tariff-free access for Canadian beef to Japan could increase the value of Canadian beef exports to over 275 million dollars annually.

Japan is currently the world's third-biggest economy and Canada's fifth-largest trading partner.
