The Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan has released five new spring wheat varieties.

Four of the varieties are hulled wheat with two of them Einkorn and the other two, Emmer cultivars. The fifth variety, CDC Kinley, is a Hard White Special Purpose variety suitable for baking and malting.

Pierre Hucl is a professor at the CDC and says these varieties are now available to producers.

"These varieties are what we call public releases," he said. "Anybody can come and buy breeder seed from our breeder seat unit at the CDC. We have an online webpage that can be accessed fairly easily."

Hucl adds it took about 16 years to bring the hulled wheat varieties to the stage where they were able to release them.
