The Kyle, Whitebear, Lacadena, Sanctuary area got hit hard with rain yesterday.

Farmers have been out evaluating the damage.  Brock Gillanders says the rain started around 4 pm and in a span of a couple of hours had dropped about 2 and ¾ inches of rain which has caused some flooded out crops and other damage:

"There was a lot of water in a short period of time going through our yard. It was like a lake or river - some older steel bins that we hadn't quite fastened yet and were empty, floated them a fair ways from where they were situated," he said.

Gillanders says they also got a large amount of hail.

"The durum around here was in the 3-4 leaf stage. The lentils and peas are both pretty tough at this stage, and the canola was toonie-sized- so hopefully, it will come back."

He says the ground was white but says he and his neighbours will likely have more damage from flooded crops .

"In that area where the flood plane is, we probably ourlseves got 800-100 acres. I'm hoping we'll not lose it all but I'm pretty sure we'll lose at least 500 acres, and some of our neighbours will be in the same situation. There will definitely crop that is lost that will probably not be recoverable. I'm just hoping by June 15, we might be able to seed some green feed."

He lost some lentil, pea  and canola fields and notes Crop Insurance will cover it sort of.

He says the majority of the crop in the area is in the ground but adds like others they still had a few acres to finish off.

He says at this point they now have had close to 7 inches of rain so far.

Gillanders says he’s got a tractor and air drill and two of his neighbour have a tractor and drill and a tractor and land roller sitting in water adding it’s going to be interesting trying to get them out.
