Farmers across the prairies frustrated by rural crime are signing up to a new facebook group.

The group Farmers Against Rural Crime was launched about a week ago and already has over 3000 members.

The facebook group was started by Nick Cornea, a farmer from Briercrest to shed light on the epidemic of rural crime.

"There is a few of us that always talk about it, and when I seen a video online about a farmer from Alberta that had a shotgun blasted over the hood of his truck after he pursued some people that stole from him, that really woke me up and I said, 'There needs to be change. We need to do something about this.' So I fired up the computer and looked for more support from other farmers and started this Facebook page, 'Farmers Against Rural Crime,'" he said.

He notes they do not promote violence adding that farmers signing onto the page and sharing ideas and options for things like security cameras, dash cams, driveway alarms etc.

He was also pleased to see that RCMP Detachments in the last couple of weeks have also been holding Town Hall meetings to talk about Rural Crime issues.

Cornea says farmers, ranchers and acreage owners should have a sense of security without the increasing fear of being a victim of crime because they live in a rural area.

"We have people commenting about security systems, different pricing, we have people sharing their stories of what they have done with scaring people off. And it's good to see that the RCMP is also starting to listen to us and see that this is an epidemic, and something that needs to be addressed."

Cornea is also looking for information on rural crime to take to the premier, the Justice Minister, and RCMP to raise awareness to the issue and put in a call for action.
