The temperature has been quite variable with lows again last night reaching 0°C in some areas of the province, but the weather forecast seems to be steadily improving.

That will help warm up the soil, improving seeding and crop emergence going forward.

Patrick Moolecki, a Soil and Nutrient Management Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, says soil temperature is a key factor for farmers right now.

"Most of the crops will germinate very well at temperatures above 10°C," explains Moolecki. "That's kind of the temperature where seedlings will germinate very well and will emit quickly out of the soil."

Moolecki adds seed treatments can be beneficial if seeding into a cool soil temperature in order to avoid any soil borne disease issues.
