Producers thinking about seeding forages or cover crops this year may be interested in a Forage Agronomy Workshop next week in Swift Current.

The Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards Executive Director Kevin Steinley talks about what people can expect at the workshop.

"We will have Ken Wall, the agronomist from the Pioneer Co-op will be talking about the establishment and especially establishment on saline soils," he says. "Trevour Lennox from the Ministry of Agriculture will be discussing fencing and grazing management especially looking at the management of native forage."

He adds producers will have a chance to learn more about new varieties, seeding techniques and cover crop opportunities that are more drought tolerant:

The workshop next week is designed to help promote the seeding of forages on lands that have salinity issues or have the possibility of eroding in Swift Current.

Steinley talks about the overall benefits.

"Minimize erosion and also to minimize salinity issues to try and keep nutrients and possible farm chemicals out of runoffs and eventually going into the creek."

Producers interested in learning more about the benefits of forages and how they can help improve soil and watershed health should contact the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards.

The Forage Agronomy Workshop is set for January 24th 1 pm at the Coop Agronomy Centre.
