Farmers are making good seeding progress this week despite rain in some areas.

Seeding is most advanced in the southeast with 30% of the crop in the ground; 18% is done in the southwest;

"Overall, things are starting to really pick up," Shannon Friesen is the Province’s Cropping Management Specialist said. "In the southeast, they lead the province with 30% of the crop in the ground. The southwest follows with 18%, the west central region with three percent, the northwest and east central regions with 2%, and the northeast with 1%"

"So that is up from 2% last week. The producers in that area have really had a good stretch of weather. There was some reports of rainfall as well. Fields for the most part are optimal, but of course there are some areas that are dealing with excess moisture, especially in those low spots. Crops ranging form pulses to cereals, even some canola and some mustard are also going in."

Meantime other areas are just getting started with 3% seeded in the west-central area; 2% in the northwest and east-central regions and 1% in the northeast.

Harvesting of last year’s crop continues in some areas as time permits, and Flax stubble is also being burned.
