There’s a lot of buzz around a potential takeover of Viterra.

Glencore International a commodity and mining giant based in Switzerland has reportedly made a $5.5 billion offer to take over Viterra.

Federal Liberal Deputy Leader Ralph Goodale believes any decisions need to be clearly thought through given the impact it can have on farmers

"Are decisions about Canadian grain marketing better made in places like Regina, Winnipeg and Calgary," Goodale said. "Or Switzerland or Tokyo? We're losing a strong measure of Canadian influence here and I think people need to think that through."

Goodale is calling on the Harper government to outline clear rules for foreign takeover bids of Canadian companies.

"So that the company in Saskatchewan will know where it stands," Goodale said. "Any foreign buyers or other buyers... would know where they stand, and the public and Canadian farmers would know where they stand as well."

Premier Brad Wall has said that Viterra Inc. does not fit Saskatchewan's definition of a strategic asset adding that    the province would need to weigh the fiscal and economic impacts of a potential takeover
