The investigation into what happened at the Shamrock Pasture continues.

Friday afternoon 200-plus head of cattle and calves were found dead at the Shamrock pasture.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Betty Althouse says they believe salt toxity and the water could be the cause, but are waiting on lab results.

A total of 30 producers owned cattle on the property.

Russ Coward is among the six to 10 owners who lost cattle.

"We run 75 hare in this particular pasture, where this event happened," Coward. "We have not been able to do a quality count yet. I haven't been able check all the numbers, just because we've been concerned with bringing the sick cattle back."

He says they haven’t looked at insurance or compensation too hard yet, noting it doesn’t look promising, the priority right now is looking after the other animals.

"As of right now, we have not looked into that extensively. It does not look promising," said Coward. "Insurance is going to be a tough thing. We're just trying right now to deal with the cattle that we can help."

Financial losses for affected producers are estimated at about $300,000.
