It’s another milestone year for Moose Jaw’s Dr. Andy Schmitz, a Professor of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Florida.

This year marks his 50th year as a Professor and the 25th Anniversary of the Farming for Profit Conference in Moose Jaw.

The Farming for Profit Conference brings University Professors from around North America together to discuss a variety of issues around the economics of Agriculture and Political Policy to GM crops, markets and the impact of NAFTA and Trade Expansion.

At the opening day of the Conference, Schmitz says when it comes to trade we need to change the world and go back to zero subsidies, zero tariffs and zero non-tariffs and start again.

"A regional study was released by Kim Anderson out of Australia," he said. "He argues that in terms of agriculture itself there are still so many trade resources in present. Both tariffs and non-tariff barriers. He says even partial liberalization will give you an annual year of like $22 billion but he's likely right. We're a long way from anything to do with the fair trade debate, what's fair and what's free, but there's some huge impetuous trade that existed long before Trump ever came in, it's been with us for a long time"

The Farming for Profit conference wrapped up on Monday with a Panel on NAFTA.
