Farmers are making some good progress when it comes to Spring Seeding after getting a late start due to cool conditions.

Crops Extension Specialist Daphne Cruise says provincially about 34% of the crop is now in the ground.

"The Southeast is farthest advanced at 49 per cent of the crop in the ground," she said. "There are some regions particularly around Weyburn that are around the 70 to 75 per cent done. 45 per cent seeded in the Southwest, 28 per cent in the Northeast, and 26 per cent in the West-Central region, and 24 percent in both the East-Central and North-West regions."

Cruise talks about what's being seeded so far.

"Provincially spring wheat is 33 per cent done, durum is 39 per cent, flax 14 per cent, canola 26 per cent has been seeded," she said. "Soybeans 36 per cent, lentils 57 per cent, and field peas 63 per cent, for the south 54 percent of the chickpeas are now in the ground."

There have been multiple reports of grass and stubble fires in many areas due to the dry conditions, a good rain is needed to help ease the situation.
