Labour disputes at CN Rail could create a major obstacle for grain shipping this fall.

The union representing CN Conductors, Yardmen and Traffic Co-ordinators says it is ready to take action within 72 hours. Workers have been without a contract since July 22nd and "last-chance" meetings are being held this week.

Richard Phillips, Executive Director of the Grain Growers of Canada, says this could have immediate and damaging effects on the ability to export sales, saying farmers are days away from having their freight shut down, which could be devastating. He adds trade relationships with international customers will suffer if the rail strike goes ahead saying some markets may look at countries other than Canada if deliveries are not made on time.

The Grain Growers and other farm groups are calling on the federal government to impose back-to-work legislation.
