A barley head damaged by the Ergot fungus

 

The Canadian Grain Commission has been busy talking to producers about Ergot problems. 

When environmental conditions are right, the Ergot fungus can develop on the grain, impacting the crops grade and quality.

Elwin Hermanson is the Chief Commissioner of the CGC and says they’ve had reports of Ergot not just in Wheat but in Barley as well:
 
 
Hermanson says there’s definitely areas that have pockets of Ergot, unfortunately it seems fairly general throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta.
