The majority of farmers who responded to the Canadian Wheat Boards Plebiscite seem to support the boards single desk monopoly

On the Wheat question, 62 per cent of producers voted to maintain the CWB single-desk system. The margin was much closer for barley, with 51 per cent of barley growers in favour of the single desk.

Canadian Wheat Board Chair Allen Oberg is pleased with the results from the board’s own Producer plebiscite

"Today we have heard from farmers, 10's of thousands from across Western Canada, nearly 40,000 in total, exclaimed Oberg." He said their message was loud and clear and cannot be ignored.

"They voted in overwhelming numbers to retain a unique and valuable marketing structure."

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz has said  regardless of the plebiscite results, at the end of the day, every farmer will have the right to choose how they market their grain.

The Western Barley Growers Association and the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association says the boards plebiscite is irrelevant adding that there’s questions surrounding the voting process with some producers receiving more than one ballot.

Voter turnout overall was not as high as expected. Just 56% of eligible voters returned their ballots. 55% for those who grew wheat, 47% for those who grew barley.

Meanwhile, The Friends of the Canadian Wheat Board are welcoming a court decision allowing its case against the federal government to move ahead.

In June, the Friends requested a Judicial Review of federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz's plans to dismantle the Canadian Wheat Board's single desk without consulting grain producers through a plebiscite.

On Friday, a legal decision came down allowing the request and proceed with a full federal court hearing.

The Friends will be in federal court again on October 3rd when a case conference will be held.
