The Province’s newly appointed Agriculture Minister was on hand Monday for the opening of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers 99th Annual Convention in the snowy Cypress Hills.

Lyle Stewart announced $50,000 in funding for the organization for cattle traceability projects, with $25,000 going toward a tag retention project.

"Traceability is an important issue," Stewart said. "There's always issues with tags being lost so the $25,000 for the tag retention study is to find out once and for all and inform producers how is the best way to tag and which tags have the best retention rates."

The other half of that funding will go toward increasing producer awareness to the importance of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency's Premise ID program. "It's voluntary, so it's going to take some education to convince producers that they should be involved in it, and through Stock Growers is a good way to do that," Stewart added.

The Convention wraps up today.
