Amendments to the Provincial Lands Act, 2016 and Regulations were proclaimed yesterday as the Province continues to update its legislation.

The Provincial Lands Act was originally drafted to accommodate the settlement of the west and has been largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1930s.

Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart fills us in on one of the key changes:

"Providing government with the ability to respond and take action when land is misused which doesn't happen very often," Stewart said.

"Previously when that happened the only remedy was to get a court order that took enough time usually that a lot of damage could be done, now we can stop the work by issuing an immediate stop order."

More than 98 million acres of Crown lands are administered between the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment under the Province’s Lands Act.
