Federal ag minister Lawrence MacAulay is taking part in a trade mission to India this week.

He’ll be joined by Gordon bacon – the CEO for pulse Canada.

Pulse fumigation will be a key topic of discussion with India deciding not to renew an exemption that currently allows Canadian pulses to be fumigated once they reach India.

Bacon says shipments are already being affected ahead of the march 31st deadline.

"We have steamship lines that are not providing equipment to be shipped to India because the containers won't arrive until after the 31st of March now, " Bacon said. "When you take a look at even shipping bulk we're past the time where

vessels can be chartered, loaded and sailed to India so it's really ground things to a halt when you in terms of trade to our biggest market."

Bacon notes that India is Canada's biggest market for pulse exports.
