Canadian Wheat Board Chairman Allen Oberg is seen here talking with reporters following a meeting with producers at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina back in June 2011

Today marked the beginning of the end for the Canadian Wheat Board, as the Harper Government introduced legislation this morning to end the board's marketing monopoly.

The plan to end the board's single desk is being met with mixed reaction, with some farm groups strongly opposing the move, and others strongly supporting it.

CWB Chair Allen Oberg says this is an issue about democracy, adding the fight is not over yet as they intend to take this issue before the court.

Oberg says the government needs to conduct a plebiscite amongst farmers before making any major changes, and says it is simply wrong to change a law to avoid that democratic function.

On the other hand, Kevin Bender with the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association is pleased to finally see change.

The Federal Government intends to pass the legislation before the end of the year, putting its plans in place for the new crop year beginning August 1, 2012
