As seeding gets underway, motorists will be coming across oversized farm equipment travelling on the roads.

Farmers, drivers, and agricultural equipment operators are being urged to make road safety a top priority.

Marcel Hacault is the executive director of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association says fatalities involving motor vehicles and farm equipment is on the rise.

"That's one area, where we are actually seeing an increase," he said. "We've seen a 2.8 per cent increase in the numbers of fatalities related to motor vehicles and farm equipment."

Farmers need to make sure that all machinery is equipped with proper lighting, signage, and reflections when travelling on roadways.

"Part of it is planning on the farmers part, to make sure that he does everything in his power to make sure he seen on the road," Hacault said. "I know there are quite a few campaigns out there trying to make sure that on the road vehicles are aware that tractors move a lot slower than cars and if there is a piece of equipment that's lit like a Christmas tree it's probably going slower than you are."

Motorists should slow down when approaching farm equipment and pass only when it's safe to do so.
