Monday, the Province announced $14 million thru the Municipal Roads for the Economy Program to improve rural roads, bridges and culvert.

MREP is administered by the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM).

Grants cover up to 50 per cent of the costs of road projects and 30 to 90 per cent of the costs of bridge and culvert projects.

SARM President Ray Orb says they appreciate the government’s continued support.

"We thought this year because of the financial constraints that the province has placed on us, we were lucky to get the 14 million dollars that we had previously reinstated, so we're pleased about that, at least we have the same amount of funding to work with."

Orb says they were happy they didn’t see any budget cuts to the program, as they have a lot of roads to fix.

The Clearing the Path corridors will receive $6.6 million which will be invested in its operation and maintenance.

C-T-P provides rural communities with access to primary weight roads in order to help facilitate economic development.

He notes they are anxious to see what kind of funding will be available through the new Federal Investing in Canada program:

"We need to get our share of that federal funding in Saskatchewan. We need to get the commitment which I believe we have especially for the royal infrastructure component. We that component up to 60 per cent, of federal funding and we, are still looking for the province to let us know what their share will be."

The new Federal Investing in Canada program replaces the Building Canada program.
