The Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission has been struggling to balance the books.

Excess moisture in the prime flax growing area of the province combined with the Triffid issue have had a financial impact on the organization.

As a result Chairman Lyle Simonson said the board is looking at increasing its levy to help balance the books

“The board has come to the conclusion that we're going to have to have a doubling of our levy from a dollar eighteen per ton to two dollars thirty six cents per ton which works out to three cents a bushel to six cents a bushel”

Chairman Simonson shared the reasoning behind increasing the levy

“It's the result of a couple of issues first is that our export market is down from what we used to have but I think the biggest problem we've had in the last couple of years has been weather which has lowered our seeded acreage considerbly which cuts production which cuts our levy down where we're not going to be sustainable if we don't have an increase.”

Today’s meeting is being held at the Travelodge Hotel in Regina and gets underway at 1 pm
