Financial challenges have led the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission to increase its seed levy.

Producers unanimously supported a resolution this week to increase the seed levy from 3 cents to 6 cents a bushel.

Executive Director Linda Braun talks about the issues behind the increase:

"The occurrence of triffid in the European flax supply certainly brought lots of challenges. The last two years, particularly last year, our major flax going region southeast Saskatchewan has had excessive water conditions. That moisture has certainly caused us to lose a lot of our acreage."

The money is used to support breeding and agronomy programs that help to retain Canada’s competitive flax standing in the world.
