It’s big news for Canada’s beef industry. The last major market still closed to Canadian beef is finally re-opening.

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says starting immediately, South Korea has opened its doors to beef from Canadian animals under 30 months of age.

Canada had filed a WTO challenge against South Korea, but suspended the request last summer when the Koreans agreed on a process to re-open the border by the end of 2011.

Expectations are that the restored South Korean market could mean more than $30 million for Canadian producers by 2015.
