Statistic's Canada has released it's seeding intentions report for 2018.

Concerns over exports and lower prices have resulted in a decline in dry pea and lentil acres.

Total lentil acreage is down about 8.1% across Canada to 4.1 million acres in 2018.  Meantime, Saskatchewan's lentil acreage is expected to drop 8.4% to 3.6 million acres.

Farmers are also looking at less canola and soybean acres, crops that were both at record levels in 2017.  Canadian soybeans acres are down about 13% to 6.3 million acres, while canola acres are down 7% to 21.4 million acres.   The expected drop in Canola is a result of a 10% drop in seeded acreage in Saskatchewan.

Most of the acreage not seeded to major oilseeds and pulses this Spring has shifted over to cereal crops.  The report shows the Canadian seeding intentions for spring wheat are up 15.4% over last years level to 18.2 million acres, while durum wheat acreage is expected to increase 11% to 5.8 million acres.

In Saskatchewan, total wheat acreage is expected to rise for the first time since 2013 to 13.1 million acres up 15.8%.  The jump in wheat acreage in the Province is due to a 17.2% increase in spring wheat acreage to 8.1 million.
