Grade 4 students from Swift Current and area schools were out at the Food Farm to take part in the harvest and learn more about their food.

Kari Burnett with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture says this year’s theme was the great Canadian breakfast and noted it was another great event.

"The kids are pretty excited," said Burnett. "We had 178 kids and they were from six different schools and it has been a fun community event for us and we've got lots of different professionals from the agriculture sector."

Burnett added what the importance of teaching kids where their food comes from.

"We've seen that a lot of kids don't realize where their food comes from and don't know the important role that agriculture plays in everyday life," Burnett said. "We eat three times a day and lots of kids don't realize where that food is coming from. They think that they just go to the store and its magically there waiting for them."

The students rotated thru various learning stations focusing on the weather, vegetables, wheat, flax, oats, mustard, canola, fruit and the equipment that is needed to harvest the crops

Burnett says the kids learned about the impact weather has on crops, that potatoes are used in hash browns, wheat is used for bread, flax and oats are found in cereal bars, how canola is used in margarine and the Equipment needed to harvest the crops.
