The Regional Co-ordinator for the National Farmers Union is commenting on Thursday's federal budget presentation.

Ed Sagan said he is encouraged by a 51-million-dollar committment over two years to streamline the food safety regulation process, “It's essential that they did that because we had lots of call backs on food and to the fact it did meet specification. I feel very strongly maybe that's the best thing that could of happened that they gave additional funding to do inspections in that field.”

Sagan adds, however, he doesn't like potential cuts in spending, “Everytime they cut funds and stuff like that their cutting staff across Canada including in agriculture, it's not good as I think in agriculture we need all the assistance we can get our hands on.”

It's still unknown where the spending reductions or staffing will be made, but those details are expected soon.
