The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting what the rest of the month and October will look like.

While they were way off track with the summer forecast they are predicting a warm end of the month and then a cool October with some potential snow just before Thanksgiving.

Winter is where it'll get interesting though according to managing editor Jack Burnett.

"For the prairies, we are looking at a milder than normal winter but still a lot colder than last winter."

Burnett says the winter should allow some moisture to return to the fields after the hot, dry conditions meant this year's crop tapped out some of the topsoil moisture reserves.

"As far as precipitation and snow go, we can expect a little bit tiny less than a normal winter, you know maybe 5 millimetres fewer that's almost insignificant."

The 2018 edition of the Farmer's Almanac is now on store shelves.

The book has always been extremely popular with farmers and ranchers.
