U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue was in Prince Edward Island Friday for a meeting with Canada's Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

As expected, supply management was a hot topic during the joint media conference.

Perdue explained the position of the United States.

"We're not here though to dictate to Canada to do away with its supply management system," he said. "We do think that we have a request that the supply be managed so that we do not overproduce and depress world milk solid prices in that way."

When asked about NAFTA, MacAulay says both sides need to come out ahead.

"What I want to do, is make sure that our farmers get a fair deal, and Sonny wants to make sure that his farmers get a fair deal. We both understand that it's a win-win situation. It's not a win-lose situation."

MacAulay says both he and Perdue want to make things better for the agriculture industry on both sides of the border.
