In the last couple of weeks, there’s been a lot of discussion regarding trade between Canada and the U-S.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association wants to see Canada and the U-S harmonize regulations to ensure the free flow of wheat between Canada and the U-S.

Wheat Growers President Levi Wood says open access is keynoting that Canada exports about 850 thousand tonnes of wheat products to the U-S, while they export about 45 thousand tonnes into Canada:

"The real issue in the whole situation here is Canadians can deliver their wheat into the U.S. markets right now with basically with a very low problem right now," Wood said. "The challenge being for U.S. farmers coming north, right now through the grain commission and our grading and our classification system, U.S. produced grain can only access the Canadian market for the feed grade systems."

He says we need to open the regulations making the system more equitable and integrated for U-S exporters, adding he’s not concerned about losing market share here at home.

He also spoke about Canada and the U-S harmonize regulations to ensure the free flow of wheat between the two countries.

"We all benefit by having more of a free flow between the two countries," he said. "Our systems are integrated especially on our food ingredients and milled products going back and forth. Well, I think we're talking about the number of deliveries going into the U.S. much larger than the deliveries coming into Canada, I really don't see that as a concern right now other than with some of the border states."

When it comes to wheat products heading to the U-S we export about 850 thousand tonnes, while the U-S exports about 45 thousand tonnes.
