The Western Grains Research Foundation says unless another check-off system is implemented, it stands to lose wheat and barley check-off revenue when the marketing role of the CWB is eliminated in 2012.

Since 1995, the board has been the collection agent for the foundation's research check-offs

Federal Agriculture Minster Gerry Ritz says he’s a little frustrated by the WGRF’s view:

 

 

Ritz added that program will continue on, and the WGRF will continue to do the great work that they do.

 

The foundation is the largest producer-supported fund for wheat and barley cultivar development in Canada, and has been investing almost $5 million annually into breeding research and has supported the release of more than 100 new varieties of wheat and barley.
