Adolf Hitler wins absolute power when 89.9% of the German electorate votes him into the positions of President and Chancellor into a single office, occupied by him.
1939
Local police officials advised Calgary feed stores to stop selling Indian hemp seed (from which marijuana plants could be grown) for any purpose. Although the growing of marijuana itself had been illegal for many years, customs authorities extended the ban to imported hemp seed. Farmers considered the plant an excellent windbreak and others used it to feed pet birds.
Needless to say, birds were funnier then.
1942
World War II: Operation Jubilee – the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division leads an amphibious assault by allied forces on Dieppe, France and fails, many Canadians are killed or captured. The operation was doomed to fail, and was intended to develop and try new amphibious landing tactics for the coming full invasion in Normandy. 81 South Sasks were killed.
2003
Two members of Kenny Chesney's video crew and a helicopter pilot escape serious injury when the copter crashes while shooting video footage in Austin, Texas. Chesney is not present

A series of strong storms lashes Southern Ontario spawning several tornadoes as well as creating extreme flash flooding within the city of Toronto and its surrounding communities. In Toronto, it is also dubbed as the Toronto Supercell.
National news headlines: MADRID – A bull leapt into the packed grandstands of a Spanish bullring and ran amok, charging and trampling spectators and leaving 40 people injured, regional officials said Thursday.
Video showed the bull jumping several meters (yards) high out of the ring, clearing two barriers before landing in the stands and raising a panic as he lurched through the screaming crowd, charging and tossing everything he could.
