It's more and more common, small towns and villages just can't keep the doors open to their schools and they have to bus them to neighboring towns.

The village of Abbey, which is about an hour northwest of Swift is a prime example of one of those communities.

Board Member Tanya Scrivens said with the significant drop in attendance, it was inevitable the students would need to be sent to Cabri school for the 2014 school year, officially closing their doors in June of this year, but they weren't ready to just demolish a perfectly good building.

"The village was approached about taking over the building, and we did some research as to what we could do with the facility because it is a very good building," Scrivens said, "so we looked into it, and the village has now taken it over."

Scrivens said that's how the Abbey Business and Community Centre was born.

"What we're looking to do, is bring some businesses that were in Abbey in the past back in, such as a massage therapist, hairdressers, that type of thing, anyone that would be looking for a satellite office location, we're right along 32 highway so it's very easy access, and we also want to involve our community, our community hall was in much needed repair so we've moved that over as well."

The Board is in the marketing process and trying to fill their spots.  If you're interested in filling a spot or making a donation to the centre, you can call the board president, Brian Scriven at 306-689-2566.
