1906

In response to the growing number of cars on the province's roads and the recklessness of many drivers, members of the Provincial Legislature for Sturgeon, introduced a motion to "regulate the speed and operation of motor vehicles on highways." The speed limit was established at 20 miles per hour in the country and 10 in the city. If a horse was on the road and appeared startled, the vehicle had to come to an immediate and complete stop until the horse moved on.

Elvis Presley makes his Las Vegas debut, with Shecky Green and the Freddy Martin Orchestra, at the New Frontier Hotel. Reaction is so negative, his four-week booking ends after two weeks

The Coca-Cola Bottling Company announces that it has irrevocably changed the formula for its flagship beverage, unveiling "New Coke." National news headlines this morning: A condemned killer appears headed for a date with death in Utah that could see him sit before a firing squad — a development that would likely re-ignite protests over an antiquated, Old West-style of justice.

At a hearing Friday, 3rd District Judge Robin Reese will consider whether to sign a warrant of execution for Ronnie Lee Gardner, who killed a man during a failed escape 25 years ago.

Under state law Gardner, 49, would be allowed to decide whether he would be killed by lethal injection or be shot by a five-man team of executioners firing from a set of matched rifles, a rarely used relic that harkens back to Utah's territorial history.
