With an earthquake on the west coast and a hurricane on the east coast, Canadians have been dealing with the impact of natural disasters in recent days.

While we aren't facing anything immediate in Swift Current, an emergency kit is a good way for a family to be prepared for whatever may come.

"We often suggest that someone has a 72-hour kit, and that's the amount of time that people should be able to care for themselves while cities stabilize major emergency situations and start to make provisions to be able to assist other people," said Swift Current Deputy Fire Chief Pete L'Heureux. "We would expect people to have things like water and food for that 72 hors for each person in your family. A battery-operated or crank-operated radio and flashlight, extra clothing, and any special supplies that you need, like medication or baby food and supplies for a baby in your family."

L'Heureux also recommends discussing your emergency preparedness and the location of your survival supplies with your children in case one or both parents aren't around when an emergency occurs.

The city is prepared for a number of different scenarios as they are part of a provincial organization that plans jointly for emergencies.

L'Heureux says they have committees in place who are prepared to roll out in the event of an emergency, such as the threat of flooding in 2011.
