On December 28, Swift Current RCMP received a report of an assault at an apartment on Robert Street East in Swift Current at approximately 11:45 p.m. 

After investigating, RCMP determined that an adult male assaulted an adult female before she was able to leave the building.

She was then approached by the male, who threatened her with a firearm and a machete. He returned to the apartment building, and she was able to contact the police. 

The female reported injuries described as non-life-threatening and was taken to the hospital for assessment.

Swift Current Municipal RCMP officers, with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team, arrested the male without incident at the apartment on December 29. 

A search warrant was administered at the apartment and officers located and seized an imitation firearm, a machete, and a small amount of suspected fentanyl.

Derek Ruest, 34, from Swift Current is currently facing eight charges, including one count of assault, one count of sexual assault, and overcoming resistance to the commission of an indictable offence. 

He is also charged with one count of possessing weapons contrary to order, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, one count of pointing a firearm, and one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon. 

Ruest is scheduled to appear in Swift Current Provincial Court today.
