The best of the best in Canadian High School Rodeo have gathered in Swift Current for the Finals, which commenced this morning at Kinetic Park.

Accompanying the competitors are this year's Rodeo Queens, Saskatchewan’s Halle Gaudry, and Alberta’s Tawnie Thompson.

“The top five in each event in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia have all come to compete for the big title,” Thompson explained. “This is a Canadian title, a national title. This is a very big deal for all of our contestants, they have been competing year-round for this.”

Gaudry, who was recently elected Queen, said that the opportunity has been nothing short of extraordinary.

“It's truly life changing,” she stated. “I've just started, and I've already met so many amazing people. Like Tawnie, I wouldn't have ever got to know her if I wasn't queening. I think that it really just makes myself better, and I really like to put myself out there. So, it gives me an opportunity to showcase not only my talent, but all the talent that's in this amazing association.”

There are 320 students competing in events over the three days of competition and 555 entries.

Over a dozen events are scheduled for the rodeo and include; Bareback Riding, Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Goat Tying, Pole Bending, Steer Wrestling, Bull Riding, Cutting and Reined Cow Horse.

The event will continue into Saturday and will conclude with award and scholarship presentations.
