Bike enthusiasts are out in full force with the warmer temperatures finally descending upon Swift Current.

With the increase in bikers now out and about, the Swift Current City RCMP is reminding the public of all ages of the dangers of not protecting bicycles from thieves. Last year the City RCMP dealt with 13 bike theft cases.

Gary Christopher, a constable with the Swift Current City RCMP, said perhaps the most useful tool to prevent bike theft is a lock.

"Of course, a lock is only going to keep honest people more honest but that does reduce the temptation to steal a bike," he said.

Another preventative measure and one step further Christopher adds is to lock the bicycle up inside of a garage or shed.

Law enforcement encourages the public to take photographs of their bike and serial number to help them in the case of a bike theft.

"If it is stolen, we would like the serial number which is located underneath the bike between where the pedals are," he said. "All bikes should have that or distinctive marking could be etched in there if you have an engraver."

The City of Swift Current and City RCMP have also teamed up to create a bike registry

Anyone that falls victim to a bike theft can reach out to the City RCMP at 306-778-4870 or visit the Saskatchewan RCMP website here to report the incident.
