Blue-green algae is thriving in the hot weather.

A swim in the lake can quickly result in a trip to the hospital due to contact with blue-green algae.

Saskatchewan Environment is reminding residents that the recent warm weather can result in the quick formation of algae blooms.

Senior Water Policy Analyst Richard Zitta says the best thing is to avoid going into water with algae.  If you do come in contact with an algae bloom, it is important to wash off immediately and towel off as well.  He says it's important to keep small children away from the blooms, as well as pets and livestock.

The blooms are heavy in concentration and are usually blue-green, bright blue, grey, or tan in colour.  Contact with algae-contaminated water can result in a number of consequences including red skin, sore throat, and cramps.
