Swift Current is loosing the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program.

Yesterday, at a solemn press conference in Memorial Park, the organizers of Big Brothers/Big Sisters revealed that the agency will close August 31st.

Acting borad president, Joe Axon, said right now, they have ten active traditional matches, with at least half to close within the year. He reported that there was a lack of interest in the In-School Mentorship Program.

Axon adds that even their constant fundraising couldn’t save this valued service.

The Bigs had several fundraisers, including a 2004 Golf Tournament that slammed a net profit of $20,000.

Bigs Executive Director, Lori Peters, says the effort to communicate with our young must continue.

In 2003, the agency was in debt. A major fundraiser at the end of 2003 saved the agency. There are enough funds to reach their month-end closure.

The Bigs have helped the community since 1985.
